Duties and Responsibilities

Job Specific Duties

:

Ante Natal Ward

:

  1. Functions as the overall charge nurse of the unit.
  2. Coordinates care for all the antenatal patients in the unit.
  3. Does vaginal examinations to patients to assess the progress of labour.
  4. Recognizes emergency situations, takes appropriate actions to provide initial stabilization of the mother and foetus, pending arrival of the Physician, e.g. in eclamptic or antepartum haemorrhage patient.
  5. Plans and provides teaching to their understanding of pregnancy and childbirth, by using the patient educator.
  6. Exercises professional behaviour and is responsible for her own actions as a Head midwife.
  7. Acts as a resource person to all her staff in the unit, in decision making and problem solving whenever required.
  8. Performs uncomplicated unit deliveries when labour ward is full or patient is in precipitate labour, adhering to the unit guidelines for ward deliveries.

Labour Room:

  1. Functions as the overall charge of the unit.
  2. Coordinates care for all the labouring patients in the unit.
  3. Does vaginal examinations to patients whenever necessary to assess the  progress of labour.
  4. Performs uncomplicated deliveries and adhere to the unit guidelines for unit deliveries.
  5. Performs episiotomies whenever indicated and repairs episiotomies and uncomplicated tears such as fist degree tear.
  6. Recognizes emergency situations, takes appropriate actions to provide initial stabilization of the mother and foetus, pending arrival of the Physician, e.g. in pre-eclamptic, eclamptic, antepartum haemorrhage, or postpartum haemorrhage patients.
  7. Exercises professional behaviour and is responsible for her actions as a Head midwife.
  8. Acts as a resource person to all her staff in the unit, in decision making and problem solving whenever required.

Post Natal Ward.

  1. Functions as the overall charge of the unit.
  2. Coordinates care for all the postpartum patients and newborn babies in the unit.
  3. Plans and provides teaching to their understanding of postpartum care, breast feeding and baby care by using the patient educator.
  4. Recognizes emergency situations, takes appropriate action to provide initial stabilization of the mother or baby, pending arrival of the Physician.
  5. Exercises professional behaviour and is responsible for her actions as a Head midwife.
  6. Acts as a resource person to all her staff in the unit, in decision making and problem solving whenever required.
